RS-448 - The Great Northern in Seattle
This Reference Sheet discusses the history and operation of the Great Northern Railway in Seattle. It begins with the construction of the Seattle and Walla Walla, a narrow-gauge coal road that was the predecessor of the Pacific Coast Railroad. Next it considers the Northern Pacific, its lines to Seattle, including its refusal to provide service to Seattle for several months. The next road in Seattle was another local project, the Seattle, Lake Shore, and Eastern, for which Railroad Avenue was established across the city waterfront. Development and arrival of the Great Northern follows and the later arrival of the Chicago, Milwaukee St. Paul & Pacific and the Union Pacific are summarized.
The focus then shifts to physical facilities including passenger depots, freight yards, Interbay, the trains switched there in the1960's and the switch jobs of the time. Because of the volume of reciprocal switching, it and car hire reclaim are discussed for the historical record. A two-page color map locates the lines and facilities.
