RS-436 - Rebuilt Double Door Boxcars in 40000 and 40100 Series.

Between 1924 and 1929, the Great Northern acquired 3,100 50-foot, single-sheathed automobile box cars. This was discussed in Steffan Ehnbom’s June 1986 Reference Sheet, Number 107, titled, “GN 50-Foot Automobile Box Cars.” By the 1950s, many of these cars needed major repairs and became the basis for various re-buildings. In 1952 it was decided that 450 cars in the 28975-29999 series of single-sheathed automobile cars from 1925 should be rebuilt into steel sided single and double door box cars, using original underframes and ends and adding new steel sides, doors and roof.
