RS-445 - The Great Northern Railway's Montana Snowsheds
This Reference Sheet discusses in detail each of the several snowsheds constructed by the Great Northern between Browning and Essex Montana. GN built two types of snowsheds, a 'prairie' type to protect against wind-blown snow drifts, and an 'avalanche' shed to protect against avalanches originating on mountain slopes above the railroad. The purpose and history of each shed is summarized. This Reference Sheet will tell you everything you could ever want to know about these important, and expensive structures that enabled the railway to operate through the steep slopes of the Rocky Mountains. It features excellent maps and photographs.
