HITZEMAN’S FEED MILL

Small feed mills were common in the early 20^th century, and are still important in many small towns. This structure features loading docks in both front and back. Dimensions: 9 inches long, 5.5 inches wide, 7 inches high.

Feed mills receive bulk grain, roll or grind it, and sell to resulting animal feed in bags. As time went on some mills, particularly the smaller ones, removed their machinery and became a distribution point for feed produced elsewhere. In that case feed came in by rail in bags, and left in the same bags. Either way, product arrived in box cars not over 40 feet long.
