Biography of Railroad Artist Larry Fisher

Larry’s interest in the railroad dates back as far as he can remember. He was born into a railroad family, May 9th 1939 and lived in Harvey, North Dakota. Larry’s father Donald, a Soo Line retiree after 35 years as a brakeman and conductor, was a great influence both as an artist and as an avid fan of the railroad.

During his father’s early years on the Soo Line Railroad, his job took him away from family for long periods of time. Larry’s dad would always send letters back home and would include a pencil drawing of a train scene for Larry and his brother Darrell. Darrell would go on to work for the Milwaukee Road out of Harlowton, Montana. In the return letter that Larry’s mom would write to her husband, Larry would include a train drawing of his own.

Following graduation from Harvey, North Dakota High School in 1957, Larry joined the United States Air Force and went to Alaska. He continued his drawings for his buddies in the barracks. In 1964, following his time in the United States Air Force, he drove a taxi cab for a year before working for a TV station in Fargo, North Dakota as a cameraman and set designer.

Larry’s big break came when he was asked to do a front cover for a national magazine…. Railfan & Railroad. This cover led to other railroad magazines and railroad book covers and eventually Limited Edition Railroad Art Prints.
